3916 km in 14 days

We drove. Hither and yon, over tall mountains and across wide prairies.

It was very good to go away, and very good to come home again.  There is nothing like going totally offline to bring me into the present moment and help me appreciate the time I usually have to work, read and write online every day.  There is also nothing like waking up in a cold, wet tent to make me appreciate the comforts of a warm, dry bed and hot running water.

I’m still getting back into my regular routines, but I’m looking forward to being more present here again and sharing some of my experiences of working to maintain gentle discipline and my search for beauty while away from home.  Not to mention spending many hours inside a moving vehicle with two little kids.

Have you ever taken an epic road trip with your kids?  How did it go?

I love that second picture of you outside the car! When my son was 9 months old and I was pregnant, we drove the Alcam highway from WA to AK in two and a half days. Craziness!

We’ve done some driving trips when we had a baby under a year old and it is So Much Harder! It was a relief this time to find that Claire could entertain herself with a book of stickers, a magnadoodle and her own feet for several hours. But like all crazy things, you just get though it and come out the other side. We moved from Ireland to Canada when Bea was 4 weeks old. Definitely crazy, but we managed it somehow!

You’re right we just get through whatever comes our way. We took a flight from Montreal to Cuba a few years ago and it wasn’t easy!! Last summer we took a road trip to Hampton Beach, New Hamspire. After 6 hours road trip with my kids 5 and 2 year olds, I discovered some strategies to make it a more stress free and pleasant trip on the way back. Check out my site for tips on this @ http://disciplineandchildren.com/family-road-trips-stress-free.html.
